Mies van der Rohe – 2012

Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Barcelona Pavilion is an architectural landmark photographed many times. It was built in 1929 for the World Expo and demolished afterwards. Due to its huge importance and impact on the history of architecture, the pavilion was rebuilt by a group of Spanish architects between 1983 an 1986. Rietveld captured the pavilion by the Bauhaus master in the afternoon during the midst of the summer of 2012. With the sun high in the sky, a warm light touches the building and its structure, thus creating a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere. Rietveld’s signature of architectural structures, perspectives, sunlight and shadows are exposed at its best in the hectic urban surroundings of Barcelona. The pavilion is completely deserted, which is a rather strange sensation given the fact that it’s such a touristic attraction and visited by many people.
