The Shibuya Firemen – 2013

‘The Shibuya Firemen’ is a series that shows the daily ceremony of the firefighters in Shibuya, a special ward in Tokyo, before they start their working day. The photographs represent a beautiful composition of lines in combination with sun, shade and a human touch. Even in this ceremony it is interesting to see the incredibly structured way of living the Japanese try to pursue on a daily basis: all the firemen are standing in a perfect neat row, their clothing detailed into perfection, waiting to be inspected by the chief fireman. The image on the far left shows the humbleness of the firemen: some of them arrive a little too late and almost crawl into the fire station with their bike in their hands. The strong light and sharp shadow almost sucks them into the space.
